Current Population Reports P-65 Series
Reports presenting quarterly data on household expectations to purchase automobiles, houses, and household durables within specified periods of time; and data on recent purchases and recent and expected changes in family income.
Reports Nos. 1-18 were based upon information obtained in the Quarterly Survey of Consumer Buying Intentions which was conducted by the Bureau of the Census from January 1959 to January 1967. Reports Nos. 19-43 are based on a revision of that survey, the Consumer Buying Expectations Survey. Reports Nos. 18, 28, 33, and 40 include data on the percent of households owning cars, homes, and selected household equipment items, including washing machines, clothes dryers, television sets, kitchen ranges, refrigerators or freezers, and dishwashers. Data are shown for all households and for households classified by family income, regions, geographic divisions, selected standard metropolitan statistical areas, place of residence (metropolitan-nonmetropolitan, inside-outside central cities, and farm-nonfarm), and tenure.
Pages vary. Quarterly. Reports Nos. 1-48 issued quarterly 1963-1977. This series represents a continuation of reports on this subject previously issued by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in the Federal Reserve Bulletin. The Census Bureau discontinued its program of surveys designed specifically to measure household ownership, and the availability and purchase of motor vehicles and selected other major consumer durables. The final surveys in this program were the 1973 and 1974 Surveys of Purchases and Ownership. The decision was made to discontinue this program because alternative data sources are in existence or are being planned. The Annual Housing Survey (Series H-150) provides data on the availability of cars and light trucks, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics is planning to sponsor a continuing Survey which will provide comprehensive data on consumer expenditures.
