Nancy presented a draft of a change that she recommends for the way boolean files are now maintained. She recommends that individual Boolean searchers personally assume responsibility for negotiating empty files. At present she has assumed this responsibility. Although 20 new files have been ordered and may be available by December, the present system does not work well and few files are available at any one time.
The Committee agreed with Nancy's recommendation and asked that she distribute the new plan to the appropriate lists.
OhioLINK has just released a report from its User Services Committee on serials aggregators. This process tries to deal with how to inform users about the full-text titles buried in databases such as ABI Inform and Periodicals Index. The report is available on the OhioLINK web site. OSU has also looked at this problem and will work in concert with OhioLINK. Other institutions in the CIC are also working on such services.
OSU's precat area is being cleaned out. Work is now proceeding on identifying and consolidating remaining collections. The goal is to clean out this area before the Main Library renovation begins. This area changes from day to day as collections are abandoned there without notification or new items seem to appear totally unannounced. This creates a challenge for technical services to know and manage what remains to be processed. Strategies are being developing to monitor and control materials in the area and to prevent the continued "dumping" of such materials.
The Moritz Law Library would prefer to maintain duplicate bib records for serials or monographic sets with extensive holdings where a different call number has been assigned by other library locations or in the current bib records. Examples are 1. United Nations treaty series and 2. Code of Federal Regulations. Only these two titles are being considered at this time.
The Moritz Law Library use a "K" classification for these titles which is different from the call numbers used in University Libraries.
The Committee approved the request to allow duplicate bib records for these two titles.
LC has issued an "Implementation of AACR2 Amendments 2001." There are three major revisions to the rules:
A test of the CORC work flow began in March 2001 with a call for collection managers to volunteer. A total of 68 records were submitted by collection managers. Of these 63 resources/records were accepted and completed through the CORC work flow. This proved to be a slow process. Many items such as plug-ins had to be addressed separately. Many revisions in cataloging copy for these sites are needed.
CORC has greatly improved but given existing resources it will be very difficult to maintain. In addition there are training issues to consider. OSUL will still catalog sites that are recommended by collection managers but will not implement a new workflow using CORC for this process. Collection mangers will not be asked to enter records in CORC. All cataloging of web sites will be done by Technical Services.
Magda proposed that we eliminate 11 local practices in cataloging which are very time consuming and pull material out of the regular workflow.
A discussion ensued on #1 Adjusting call number for Classes M, N, and Ps. Some examples will be presented at the December meeting.
The discussion of #1 and #2-11 will continue at future meetings.
