In August OSUL submitted the necessary data to OCLC and determined that OhioLINK would be the target for item record information, rather than OSCAR. One potential public services issue that Rebekah has since raised at CIPS was that many serials that circulate locally do not circulate in OhioLINK so that issue needs to be resolved.
We expect a prototype for staff review, possibly as early as December, but there may be slippage, with offering the WorldCat Local option to patrons during late winter or spring.
The draft report of this group is being presented via a webcast and public comments are invited. See the group’s website: http://www.loc.gov/bibliographic-future/
Several initiatives have required sending catalog records from OSCAR, so Nancy has revised the size of some review files. As always, empty those you are finished with and feel free to contact her if you require larger files for projects.
Since Google will be scanning selected materials at CIC libraries, there was a survey for more detailed information of CIC partners collections and OSU has submitted several areas of strength including: homeopathy at Hea, alternative dispute resolution and domestic law history at Law, East European, Middle East and Japanese collections and those at STX3. Google wants each school’s catalog records to choose themselves what to scan and Rebekah will export appropriate catalog records for them. It may be awhile before the project begins.
Participating libraries will receive a copy of the digitized full text only for out-of-copyright works, and the ownership of the digital files still needs to be documented in case any Library leaves the shared repository system at Michigan (with a mirror at Indiana). Google is receiving locally-scanned material contributions as well. WorldCat will include records for what Google has digitized.
Steve Rogers had suggested our language limit choices be reviewed. One suggestion was to put English at the top. The list is not totally in alphabetical order, and many languages are listed for which OSU has no material (it’s Innovative’s list). Given the work of making any changes, Rebekah will investigate options.
There was substantial discussion of the OhioLINK project for displaying URLs differently in the Central Catalog, preferring using an 856 field for shared OhioLINK resources and a 956 for resources available only at the contributing library. Workload for insuring the right field is used for various electronic formats at all institutions, including our own, is an issue and there will be further review of the implications of what the desired display will require.
The task forces have submitted their reports, but there have been no decisions made yet on future directions.
Given the various other groups that consider technical services issues, Sally in consultation with others is revamping the committee to become the Catalog Committee. The chair will rotate with Beth Whittaker taking the lead for 2008.
