SUBJECT: "Bound with" cataloging -- proposal for change in policy
DATE: 3 May 2003
ISSUED BY: Cataloging Dept. (nvp)
Background:
Past practice has been to use a 'work number' (colon + digit) in call numbers for materials bound together. The titles might or might not relate to one another. The work number is a local practice that was required by the old system, LCS. It has been applied inconsistently in recent years, due either to lack of knowledge or to changes in practice for several types of materials.
The current document for "Bound With" Cataloging is on the CAT website: http://library.osu.edu/sites/cataloging/boundw.htm
Call number construction is given in this example:
| First title* | PN123.A12B341985 |
| Second title (bound-with) | PN123.A12B341985:2 |
| Third title (bound-with) | PN123.A12B341985:3 |
Rationale for the change:
1) Circulation
The "colon + work number" does not appear on the spine of the volume and circulation has noticed that sometimes books are paged but the person who goes to the stacks does not find a call number that includes, for example, ":2" so they think the book is missing. The use of the work number is misleading when the record in OSCAR does not match how the piece is labeled, except for the first title.
2) Cataloging
It is simpler to stop adjusting the call number to add the work number as local practice.
Current practice usually does not include the work number in these cases:
OCLC Original cataloging
For cataloging on OCLC, if doing original records, the call number should be input only for the first work. Subsequent bib records should not include the call number used for the first work. Instead, add an appropriate call number but edit for our local situation or do not add a call number.
